Essay Writing Services

An academic essay is a concentric piece of writing which uses facts, analysis and interpretation to develop an idea or argument.

The content and duration of an essay differ depending on your level, subject matter and course requirements. However, most essays at the level of universities are argumentative: they seek to convince the reader of a certain position or viewpoint on a topic.

The method of writing the essay comprises three key phases:

  • Preparation: Decide on your topic, conduct your research and produce a draft essay.
  • Writing: Present your case, establish it with the main body proof, and finalize it.
  • Revision: Check your essay for material, organisation, grammar, orthography and formatting.

In this guide we walk you through the introduction, structure and end of an academic essay by using paragraphs from our interactive essay example.

Each essay or paper has to be prepared, written and revised in writing, but the time and effort expended at every point depends on the type of essay.

For example, you probably spend the most time writing in a high school class when you have been given a five-paragraph expository essay; on the other hand, you have to spend more time studying your subject and forming an original argument before writing a collegial essay.

Preparation of an essay

You should make sure you have a good idea of what you want to say and how you are going to say it before you begin writing. There are a few main measures to ensure that you are ready:

Understand your task: What is the objective of this essay? What is the duration and deadline of the task? Do you have to explain something to your instructor or teacher?

Defines a subject: If you can choose your own subject, try selecting something you already know a little about, which will interest you.

Do the investigation: Read primary and secondary sources and take notes to help you determine your position and perspective on the subject. You are going to use this as proof of your points.

Come to a thesis: The thesis is the main point or statement you want to make. For a based essay, a simple thesis is important — you should always refer to it when you write.

Create a contour: Make a drawing of the rough structure of your article. This makes writing simpler and keeps you on track as you go.

Once you have a good idea what you want to talk about, in what order and what facts you will use, you are ready to write.

Introduction Writing

The presentation sets the tone for your essay. It should take the attention of the reader and tell them what they should expect. In general, the introduction contains 10-20% of the text.

1. Get your reader hooked

The first sentence of the introduction can attract attention and curiosity from your reader. This term is often referred to as the hook. It may be a fascinating question, a shocking fact or a bold declaration stressing the importance of the topic.

Let’s claim that we’re writing an essay on braille creation (the raised-dot reading and writing system used by visually impaired people). Our hook may make a strong statement on the subject:

Braille’s discovery was an important turning point in the development of disability.

2. Provide context information on your topic

Next, it’s necessary to give your reader context to understand your point. This may include the provision of background information, an overview of important scholarly work or debates on the subject, and difficult words. Do not give the introduction too much detail—you may expand in your essay.

3. Present declaration of thesis

Next, you should make your thesis statement — the central point you can make. The thesis statement focuses and indicates your stance on the topic. It normally lasts one or two phrases. The thesis statement for our Braille essay might look as follows:

Braille was a revolutionary new accessibility method as the first writing device developed for blind people. It not only offered functional benefits, but also contributed to changing the cultural blindness status.

4. Structure map

You will conclude the introduction by explaining briefly in long essays what is discussed in each part of the essay. This guides the reader through the structure and offers a glimpse of your discussion.

An example of an introduction to an essay

Braille’s discovery marked a significant turning point in disability history. Louis Braille invented the write-up method for blind and visually disabled people in France in the 19th century. Blindness was particularly stigmatized in a community that did not support people with disabilities in general, and the lack of access to reading and writing was a major obstacle to social participation. The concept of tactile reading was not completely new, but it was difficult to understand and use current methods based on sighted systems. Braille was a revolutionary new accessibility method as the first writing device developed for blind people. It not only offered functional benefits, but also contributed to changing the cultural blindness status. This essay starts with a discussion about the condition of the blind in Europe in the 19th century. It then explains Braille’s invention and the gradual process of accepting it in blind education. It then discusses the wide-ranging impact of this invention on the social and cultural life of the blind.

Writing the principal body

The whole of your essay is where you argue, provide proof and build your ideas to support your thesis. It is aimed at presenting, interpreting and analyzing the arguments by collecting facts and sources.

Length of text of the body

The body length depends on the type of test. The body contains an average of 60% to 80% of your essay. This may only be three paragraphs for a secondary school essay, but for a 6,000 word graduate school essay the body will take between 8 and 10 pages.

Structure of the paragraph

It is necessary to organize it into paragraphs in order to give your essay a simple structure. Each paragraph should focus on one principal point or concept.

This concept is presented in a theme phrase. The subject sentence should usually be taken from the previous point and the point to be made in this paragraph should be introduced. Transition terms can be used to establish direct links between phrases.

After the topic sentence, present facts from relevant sources such as details, examples or quotes. Be sure that the proof is interpreted and explained and how it helps to build the overall case.

Example of an essay paragraph

Failure to read and write caused a significant disadvantage in society in the nineteenth century. Text was one of the primary methods for people engaged in community, communicating and receiving information; blind people were excluded from social participation without a well-developed reading system not reliant on sight (Weygand, 2009). Although people with disabilities were generally discriminated against, blindness was widely regarded as the biggest disability and blind people are often not able to pursue a career or improve themselves through culture (Weygand, 2009). That shows the importance of reading and writing to social status at the time: it was considered impossible to participate completely in society without access to text. Blind people were excluded from the world of sight, but also relied entirely on intellectuals for education and knowledge.

Conclusion

The final paragraph of an article is the end. It should usually not take up more than 10-15% of the text. A clear conclusion to the essay:

  • Back to your thesis
  • Bind your key points together
  • Shows why your argument is relevant.
  • A perfect conclusion should be concluded with a memorable or impressive sentence that left a good impression on the reader.

What should not be included in the conclusion

To make the conclusion of your essay as good as possible, you can avoid some things. The most frequent errors are:

  • Fresh claims or proof included
  • Undermine the claims (for example, “This is only one approach by many”)
  • Concluding sentences such as “to sum up…” or “to conclude…”
